The Land Experts Group (LEG) meeting was held virtually on 13 August 2020 and was attended by 57 delegates from 16 economy members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), namely: Australia, Canada, China, Chile, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Peru, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, the United States, and Viet Nam.
The LEG virtual meeting mainly discussed two agenda themes: (1) updates of on-going projects and introduction of new concept notes; and, (2) issues related to the impacts of COVID-19 on mobility and connectivity including global supply chains.
Ms. Irina Bykova, LEG Chair, highlighted the serious challenges faced by the transport industry due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Further, it was maintained that it is important to share best practices in order to provide safe transport services for passengers as well as creating safe and sustainable supply chains.
Among the APEC projects presented during the LEG meeting are: (1) Combating Human Trafficking by Addressing Illicit Uses of Transportation; (2) Identifying Uses of App-Based Transportation Mobility Technologies for Inclusive Smart Cities; and, (3) Models of the Digital Transformation of Transport Education in APEC Economies.
The Philippine Delegation was headed by Mr. Elvin Tinsay from the Office for Transportation Security. Other members of the delegation were representatives from the Department’s Planning and Project Development Office and International Cooperation Division.
