In the celebration of the 47th anniversary of the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) yesterday, two vital programs for our Filipino seafarers have been presented —the Ceremonial Signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the ‘Seafarers’ Condotel’, and the Ceremonial Vaccination.

“Napakagandang mga programa na inaatang on the 47th anniversary of the MARINA. I congratulate you, Vice Admiral Empedrad, for thinking about these programs, because truly, with these, you tell and say to the world that MARINA CARES FOR THE SEAFARERS,” Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Art Tugade proudly conveyed.

The establishment of the ‘Seafarer’s Condotel’, was formally introduced, as Sec. Tugade, along with MARINO Partylist Representative Sandro Gonzalez, and Associated Marine Officers and Seamens Union of the Philippines (AMOSUP) President Dr. Conrado Oca, officially signed the MOU. The signing ceremony was witnessed by MARINA Administrator Empedrad and Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) General Manager Jay Daniel Santiago.

The ‘Seafarers Condotel’ will serve as a necessary temporary living facility for the seafarers before and after their deployment on board ships in the domestic and international trade, as well as while they are processing documents and requirements in several government offices in Metro Manila.

Meanwhile, for the ceremonial vaccination, a total of 15 mariners have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine.

“Bilang pangangalaga sa kalusugan at kapakanan ng mga kababayan nating seafarers ngayong panahon ng pandemya, nagsagawa 'ho tayo ng ceremonial vaccination para sa mga mahal nating mga marino,” Sec. Tugade reiterated.

The realization of these programs manifest the government’s utmost commitment in prioritizing the overall welfare of our seafarers—our key workers and silent heroes—, as we recognize their paramount role in our socio-economic spectrum, as well as honoring them for their sacrifices for their families and the motherland.

As Sec. Tugade underscored, “Sa laki ng kontribusyon nila at sakripisyo na iniaalay sa kanilang pamilya at sa bayan, nararapat lamang na sila ay bigyan natin ng prayoridad at pagpapahalaga.”
