Wrapping up the back-to-back inauguration of transport development projects in General Santos City today, 23 September 2021, Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Art Tugade said that the ‘mission’ has been accomplished in the region as he led the unveiling of the new Port Operations Building (POB) Complex of Makar Wharf, Port of General Santos.

Secretary Tugade was joined by Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) General Manager Jay Santiago, local leaders, and other transport officials during the event.

Prior to the inauguration of Makar Wharf’s POB Complex, Secretary Tugade first unveiled the completed projects in General Santos Airport, including its expanded Passenger Terminal Building (PTB). These completed airport projects aim to complement the operations of the new seaport complex to help further bolster economic growth in Mindanao.

The new facility of the port is composed of a Port Operations Building, which houses its Port Integrated Clearance Office - a one-stop shop for all PPA transactions; and a multi-function sports facility to promote work-life balance among its employees and port workers.

Secretary Tugade also stressed that the completion of vital infrastructure projects fulfills the marching order of President Rodrigo Duterte of providing the Filipino people a comfortable and convenient life through enhanced connectivity and mobility.

“Today, Mr. President, I tell you, with the improvement of the airport, with the improvement of the seaport, and with the continued improvement we want to do in the road sector through the Service Contracting at Libreng Sakay, Mr. President, we are making the life of Filipinos in GenSan convenient and comfortable. At kung mayroon po kaming mensahe, Mr. President, eto ‘ho ‘yun: Sir, sa GenSan, mission accomplished,” said Secretary Tugade.

Meanwhile, Secretary Tugade also reminded the men and women of PPA that as servants in the government, they should exemplify values, culture, and ways of doing things. These, he said, are best manifested by cutting processing time and promoting no corruption.

“Kailangan ipangako natin sa ating mga sarili na we will cut processing time nang sa ganon ‘yung kagandahan ng building ay kaakibat ang isang magandang performance kung saan ang sambayanan at mga taong pumipila at pumaparito upang magkaroon ng resulta sa kanilang pina-follow up ay hindi mag-aantay,” Sec. Tugade expressed.

Moreover, Secretary Tugade expressed his gratitude towards PPA GM Jay Santiago and commended his people for a job well done in GenSan.

“Pinakita ninyo, na you [PPA] have done more than 430 port projects. Not one in the history of government na merong PPA na nagkaroon ng ganyang performance. Kayo, at kayo lamang, sa management ni PPA GM Santiago. Kaya dapat lang na ako’y magpasalamat sa inyo,” Secretary Tugade said.
