In the last two weeks of the Duterte administration, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) continues to deliver on its mandate and strive to provide the Filipino people an improved quality of life through enhanced connectivity and mobility across the archipelago.

Yesterday, 16 June 2022,  the Asian Development Bank’s single-largest official development assistance loan was signed for the South Commuter Railway Project (SCRP) or the Philippine National Railways (PNR) Calamba.

Stretching from Blumentritt, Manila to Calamba, Laguna, this project is the southern section of the massive North-South Commuter Railway System (NSCR).

The South Commuter Railway Project, a flagship project of the BUILD BUILD BUILD Program, involves the construction of 55.8 kms of railway, 18 stations, and one (1) 24-hectare depot.

The PNR Calamba will cut travel time between Manila and Calamba from 1 to 2 hours by bus to 45 minutes to 1 hour by train. It will likewise have an estimated daily ridership of 600,000 passengers during full operations. Other benefits of the SCRP include traffic decongestion, over 48,000 direct jobs for NSCR during construction and over 9,000 jobs upon operation.

Apart from spurring economic growth in Southern Luzon, all stations of the PNR Calamba will have universal access and intermodal facilities for easy transfer to other modes of public transportation.

The massive NSCR, with its three segments – the PNR Clark Phases 1 and 2 and the PNR Calamba will improve local, national, and international connectivity with the direct link to the international airport at Clark, making it a gateway to Asian destinations.

The Duterte administration is now on its home stretch but vital transport infrastructures that benefit our kababayans shall continue to be pushed relentlessly, to provide more convenience and inclusive growth for the country.
